PAWS for Thought
by Julia Szabo
Published in Grace Woman , July/August 2003
As Grace's four-legged correspondent, I, Pauline, often find myself in contact with other canine achievers. Recently, I hand the pleasure of meeting a fellow Boston Terrier named Mickey, who lives in
Virginia and has authored a must-read book: Lap Dog Therapy: My Journey from Companion Dog to Therapy Dog (Pickmick Publishing Co., $19.95). Mickey and his constant companion Winnie are certified by Therapy Dogs
International to deliver the healing power of paws to the many hospitals and nursing homes they visit. "A pat on the head, a loving smile, the excitement we bring to those around us, make this job very rewarding for both of us!" says Mickey. Written with the assistance of his human, Anne B. Nock, Mickey's book is available on amazon.com and bostonsworld.com. It provides all the information you'll need to learn how you and your pet(s) can make a difference
in your community.
Meanwhile, just having a pet is wonderful therapy for humans. Studies have shown that contact with animals affects human wellness in substantially positive, stress reducing ways, even lowering blood pressure. So, what can you humans do to help us pets unwind after a long day of looking after you? Play some soothing harp music. Don't worry, you needn't take lessons - simply check out Wait for the Sunset, one of five sublimely soothing CDs compiled by California harpist Susan Raimond. Through what she calls "harp therapy," Raimond has achieved astonishing results calming anxious animals at shelters, hospitals and zoos. From dogs and cats to birds, giraffes and gorillas, all have succumbed to slumber in just minutes. This is more than music, Raimond assured me. "It's a tool for stress reduction and pain management that also works well for people," she says. Maybe too well: "DON'T play this while driving!" (CDs are $15 each, available on PetPause2000.com).
